Questionaire

I have created a questionnaire in order to further my groups research into our target audience. Above I have a copy of the questionnaire that my group intends to distribute and use to work out what it is audiences would like to see from our group for our music video.

Final Logo Idea

This is the final idea for my artists logo. From research into other Dubstep logo's, I decided to use florescent colours in order to create a club/party vibe, a place where Dubstep is usually played (based on the response of our focus group).
The triangle is traditionally used for caution signs and is similar to the Danger close sign. The triangle connotates danger, which is the impression I want to give of my artist. Danger and Rebellion.
The primary colour used is yellow, this once again connotates Danger as its traditionally the colour used in caution/danger signs. The use of blue is to build on the club vibe given off of the logo, it also makes the yellow stand out more.
The headphones in the center of the triangle connotates Dubstep, as the headphones are traditionally worn by Dubstep artists and DJ's.
Overall, I believe I have created a successful logo that is suitable for a Dubstep artist. The image gives a party/club vibe and I have used the primary colours that will be used in my website and Digipak. After some peer assessment, they all believe this logo is suitable to a Dubstep artist.

Character creating.

For our music video, we plan to create characters who will follow our artist round, breaking stuff as they hunt for him. These characters will be played by me, Josh and Connor.
We watched video 1 for inspiration for the the characters pursuing our artist. The rooftop chase scene in the matrix was interesting to watch, mainly for the camera shots they used such as the point of view shot used at 0:23-0:26. Their use of slow motion is also very good, using it at different point in the video to keep the chase interesting. I would like to see this replicated for our music video. If we are to film these characters running around the school, then we need to find clever ways of keeping it interesting so we keep the attention of our audience. Moments of tension as seen in the end of the video where both her and the truck go for the phone booth, can also be replicated e.g. We could have the three figures searching for the artist separately around the school, at the end they can all find him at the same time, they all pause for a few second to build tension, then all three run towards him at the same time to try and get to him first.

We watched video 2 for inspiration for our characters. The sense of danger created by the Nazguls is perfect and we want to replicate that sense of unease and danger. For example, the Nazguls look straight at the camera as they hunt for Frodo. This puts the audience in Frodo's position because as it looks at Frodo, it feels like he's looking at us too. It makes us feel uneasy and a little bit scared. So for our video, we plan to reenact actions such as looking straight at the camera with the masks we're wearing, to place the audience in our artists Dean's shoes. I will also try to see if we have a smoke machine ready to use, as I thought the clip where they enter the room and have misty fog behind them was brilliant, it added to the dark atmosphere that the characters give. We could use the smoke for when they enter rooms if we are able to find and use a smoke machine.
For inspiration for our music video, me and Josh reviewed Limp Bizkit, take a look around. We particularly liked the split screen they used in the video, it was an interesting technique that we thought would look just as effective as it did in the video in our video. It is something that will definitely be tested, seeing how effective it looks.

Rearranging Filming.

Due to the absence of two members of our group, me and Josh have decided, with agreement from Mr Lawes, to postpone filming until January. This is so we will be fully prepared when it comes round to filming. Their absents will not affect us though, we will continue developing our music video idea, making sure it is perfected as much as possible for when it comes round for filming. It gives us time to explore other ideas make sure our music video is in line with the feedback received from our questionnaire and focus group.

Focus group video talk

Focus group

Main Points from Focus group:

- Vague idea of what Dubstep is ("I've got a vague idea")
- Not popular in Focus Group ("I dont think anyone in the world likes it")
- Generally just listened to at parties, not music they would download and listen to themselves. ("When it gets done at parties I like to dance to it", "Its not something you download and listen to for fun")
- They saw the music video set at the beach with close ups of the waves.
- Songs starts of slow and builds.
- Can imagine its a song you listen to when doing a big clean up.
- Favoured the 'Modestep - Sunlight' video due to the fact it challenged conventions (Use of old people) It was different ("It was contradicting")
- Didn't like 'Knife Party - Centipede' due to the fact the opening was very slow ("Really slow")
- Liked the switching shots in 'Knife Party - Centipede' ("I liked how it switched shots in the second one")
- "It was quite interesting getting knowledge about centipedes but it was unnecessary"

Dubstep Digipak practice.

Today I practised creating a digipak using images I was able to find on the internet. To make the best use of my time, I created a dubstep digipak.

This is the overall Digipak design that I created as practice. I am very pleased with how it looks, after some peer assessment, they all believed it was suitable for a Dubstep artist.

I edited the photo's I found using Pic Monkey. This was a very good site and allowed me to edit some photo's that I think looked quite good overall. I will keep this site in mind for when it comes round to editing my own photo's.

Group Discussion

Yesterday me and my group discussed the narrative of our final piece. This was because it was still just a rough idea and details of the narrative hadn't been developed. We used points from the focus group to help us in developing the narrative, our audience enjoy randomness and challenged conventions.

Our initial idea included a main character breaking things, but after a long discussion, we came to the conclusion that this was too cliche, boring, & lacked any progressive narrative structure. This was also pointed out by our peers during the peer assessment. We decided to firstly add more characters to the music video, to add some variation. We will also have these characters in suits, as this will challenge convention rather than having them wear hoodies and track suits. This challenge of convention is due to our focus group feedback but we were also inspired by the Beatles, a young rebellious group of teens in suits, it worked very well for them so we will replicate that. Thirdly, we are going to make the characters wear masks, this  covers their identities and also acts as humorous. We are going to show the journey to the room that they are going into by having the characters building up pace and being more and more immature as this will interest the audience.

Music Video Inspiration

I found this Dubstep video on youtube and found it to be extremely useful whist trying to plan my music video. The narrative of the video I thought was effective, the idea of using the masks and influencing everyone with it. Placing the masks on people and changing the way they behave. I discussed this video with my group and we thought it would be good to use as part of the narrative of our own music video in order to make it interesting. My character would chase Dean and place the masks.
